GINGERBREAD BOYS Sprightly addition to gift boxes or to the fireplace stockings. 2/3 c. shortening 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 c. molasses 1 egg 3 c. sifted flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. ground cloves 1 tsp. ginger 1/2 tsp. nutmeg Cream shortening, sugar and molasses. Add egg and mix well. Sift together the dry ingredients and blend into creamed mixture. Chill a few hours or overnight. Roll dough 1/4-inch thick on lightly floured board and cut with 5 to 6-inch cutter for gingerbread boys. Carefully place on greased baking sheet. Place cinnamon candies for eyes and buttons. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove to rack; cool. Decorate with confectioners sugar icing. Store in airtight container or freeze. Makes about 2 dozen. Icing for Decorating: To 1 cup confectioners sugar, add about 4 teaspoons water. Stir until smooth and thick enough to spread. Dip toothpick into icing and draw lines on gingerbread boys to look like collars, cuffs, coats. For gift giving, line a small basket with evergreens; stand a number of plastic-wrapped gingerbread boys among the evergreens.
