RED VELVET CAKE 1/2 c. Crisco 1 1/2 c. sugar 2 eggs 2 Tbsp. cocoa 3 oz. red food coloring 1 tsp. vanilla 1 c. buttermilk 2 1/2 c. cake flour 1 1/2 tsp. soda 1 Tbsp. vinegar Cream Crisco, sugar and eggs. Make paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to first mixture. Mix salt and vanilla with buttermilk. Add flour. Mix soda and vinegar; fold into mixture last (do not beat). Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees until done. Red Velvet Cake Icing: 5 Tbsp. flour 1 c. milk 1 c. butter 1 c. sugar 1 tsp. vanilla Cook flour and milk to stiff paste. Let mixture get completely cold. Cream butter and sugar; add to mixture. Add vanilla. Beat well until it looks like whipped cream. Spread on top and sides of cold cake.
