BATTER DIPPED SANDWICHES

1 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
1/2 tsp. basil
1 c. beer
2 (8 oz.) pkg. Swiss cheese
slices
2 (4 oz.) pkg. sliced ham
2 (4 oz.) pkg. sliced corned
beef or Pastrami
1/4 c. mustard
8 slices bread
vegetable oil

In bowl beat together flour, baking soda, salt, oregano,
basil and beer until well blended to make batter. Cut cheese
and meat slices in half crosswise. Spread mustard on one side
of each bread slice and top with cheese and meat slices. Press
each sandwich gently to seal layers. Heat oil in deep fat
skillet. Dip each sandwich into batter to coat completely.
Carefully slip sandwich into hot oil; fry 2 minutes on each
side until bread is golden and crisp. Remove and drain. Serve
warm. Makes 4 servings.
